Lens replacement surgery

RLE surgery takes around 20 minutes from start to finish and is carried out as a day case procedure – this means you won’t need to spend more than a few hours in hospital.

RLE surgery steps

Your surgery should only take about 20 minutes, but with everything involved before and after, you will be with us for around 3-4 hours.

Step 1

We will dilate the pupil of your eye with special eye drops. Don’t worry – they don’t hurt.

Step 2

Our anaesthetic drops will numb your eye without any needles. It might feel a little uncomfortable but you shouldn’t feel any actual pain at this stage.

Step 3

Once numb, your experienced surgeon will start by making a tiny incision on your eye. It sounds worse than it is and you won’t feel a thing.

Step 4

We will then gently break down your natural lens an ultrasound probe, so it can be removed.

Step 5

The final part of your surgery is to carefully position your new artificial lens into your eye.

Step 6

That is it. The surgery is over – all that is left is to give you an antibiotic solution to protect your eye against infection and take you to our recovery suite for refreshments.
