What is Macular Degeneration?

A quick look at Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration, most common in individuals over 50, can lead to blurred or distorted vision, with shapes appearing abnormal. Symptoms tend to worsen gradually, resulting in reduced central vision and visual distortions. In certain types of macular degeneration, treatments are available that may slow or halt the progression of the condition.
Dry macular degeneration is a common, slow-progressing eye condition that causes central vision loss due to thinning of the macula. While there is no cure, AREDS2 supplements and healthy lifestyle choices can help slow its progression. Regular eye exams and monitoring are essential for managing the condition.
Wet macular degeneration is a less common but more severe form, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina leading to rapid vision loss. It is treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections that block vessel growth and reduce leakage. Early detection and consistent treatment are crucial to preserve vision.

What is involved in treatment for Macular Degeneration?

During a consultation with one of our specialists, you will be asked a series of questions about your vision and medical history, followed by a thorough examination of your eyes to assess the extent of macular degeneration. As part of the assessment, a detailed scan of the back of your eyes will be performed to provide a clearer picture of your eye health. Our expert will also take the time to explain your diagnosis, discuss possible treatment options and recovery expectations, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
To prepare for your IVT procedure, the consultant will apply local anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye, ensuring your comfort throughout the treatment. The area around your eye will also be carefully cleaned with antiseptic to maintain a sterile environment.
Once the anaesthetic has fully taken effect, your consultant will give you an injection through the wall of your eye. The whole process is painless and will take around 5 minutes.
After your IVT procedure, you’re free to leave as soon as you feel ready. It’s normal to experience some redness or mild discomfort in your eyes for a few days following the treatment. You’re welcome to relax in our reception area and enjoy some refreshments before heading home. We strongly recommend arranging for someone to drive you, as you won’t be able to drive yourself immediately after the procedure.

What else can Intravitreal Injections treat?

In addition to treating macular degeneration, intravitreal injections (IVT) are also used to manage various other medical retina conditions.

For patients with diabetic maculopathy and retinal vein occlusion, we offer intravitreal Ozurdex injections (a sustained-release steroid implant), particularly in cases where there is an inadequate response to Anti-VEGF therapy or when Anti-VEGF agents are contraindicated due to a recent history of myocardial infarction or stroke.

Scarring from upper eyelid surgery is very minimal, as incisions are carefully placed within the natural crease of the eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery, incisions are usually made just below the lash line to keep scars as discreet as possible.
Results generally last between 5 to 10 years, depending on factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and overall skin care. While the procedure offers long-lasting improvement, the natural aging process will continue
Blepharoplasty can help restore peripheral vision when it’s obstructed by sagging upper eyelid skin. However, it does not address vision loss resulting from other conditions such as glaucoma or retinal problems.
There is no fixed age requirement. While eyelid bags are often linked to aging, some individuals develop them earlier due to genetics or skin laxity. If you’re experiencing under-eye puffiness or sagging, you may be a suitable candidate regardless of age.
The aim of blepharoplasty is to refresh and rejuvenate the eye area by removing excess skin and fat. In some cases, the eye shape may appear subtly different due to the elimination of heavy or drooping skin, but the underlying eye structure remains unchanged.
Eyelid surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Afterward, mild swelling, bruising, and some discomfort is normal but usually easy to manage with painkillers. Most patients find the recovery process quite comfortable with minimal pain.
