What is lens replacement surgery?

Lens replacement surgery can significantly improve your vision. Our experienced Vision Scotland surgeons will replace the natural lens in your eye with a small, clear synthetic implant called an intraocular lens (IOL). The focusing power of the IOL can be chosen to reduce dependence on glasses.

What happens during the procedure?

Our consultant ophthalmologist will make a tiny incision on the surface of the eye, the natural lens is then dissolved with ultrasound and removed, and replaced with your new artificial lens. The small incision will repair itself in just a few days.

How long does the surgery take?

Lens Replacement surgery typically takes 20 minutes, and you are free to go home once it has been completed.

Can I get lens replacement surgery on the NHS?

Unfortunately not. Lens replacement for vision correction is only available at private clinics like Vision Scotland in the UK.

How long will I take to recover?

It’s quicker than you might expect. In just a few days you should be enjoying better vision – but it can take up to 6 weeks for your eyes and your brain to start working together before you see the full benefits.

Once my eye has healed, will I be able to feel the replacement lens?

No, in the same way you can’t feel your natural lens, you won’t feel your new artificial lens either.
